I AM

The world in which we live has an overwhelming amount of opinions about everyone and everything. The world will try to tell you who you are, what your worth is and where you should find love. Thankfully, we aren’t defined or ruled by the words of others. Jesus Christ has another answer for us – His Word – which is FULL of TRUTH. It is filled with HIS thoughts, HIS love, HIS acceptance, HIS purpose, and HIS calling for us.

After becoming a Christian, I soon realized that my thoughts, values, and acceptance still seemed incomplete. Here I was, having encountered this amazing love in God – yet the perspective I had of myself was not positive. I was still seeking comfort and wholeness in all the wrong places. I still looked at myself in the mirror and was unsatisfied and insecure about what I saw.

There were days where I remember looking at myself in the mirror and felt disgust as I pointed out every “imperfection” on my body. I would think to myself “if I am not beautiful on the outside how will anyone love and accept me?” This lie would drive me into an emotional rollercoaster of shame and guilt as I tried to comfort myself with food- the one item that was actually driving my body to a place that I did not feel comfortable with. I remember hearing about this thought of speaking out in faith and thanking God in faith for breakthrough. I couldn’t handle the daily battle within myself and the mirror and decided to try out the concept of speaking out in faith. I started looking at myself in the mirror and telling myself “I am beautiful” over and over and over again until tears streamed down my face. There was such a battle within myself between the reality of how I felt and the power of what I was speaking out. After continuously speaking in faith I came to a place where I would look at myself in the mirror and think to myself- I AM beautiful.

Sometime after this it clicked after reading a scripture I had read many times before.

Romans12: 2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Key words: BE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWAL OF YOUR MIND.

Just in case you still aren’t getting it: transformation within yourself is accomplished through the renewing of your mind!

Ask yourself: Who do you say you are? Do you speak kind words about yourself? Or are your words harsh? What thoughts do you allow to arise in your mind? When someone pays you a compliment, what voice do you hear? Is it one of acceptance or rejection?

You see…the reality is, you ARE whatever YOU say YOU are. And who you say you are should only truly be defined by God’s Word. Do you feel rejected, unloved and inadequate? Or do you think you are loved and accepted and good enough? The choice is actually yours.
Something I want to make sure is clear: unless you think on and speak out the words of God this will never be transformational. This is not a “Self-Help” moment. This is a Biblical principle that when applied continuously [key word] can change, restore and heal.
I’m uneasy about the reality that people cling to negativity and pain; yet hesitate to believe what our Heavenly Father has said about us.

I want to encourage you to think on and speak out the truths about yourself found in Christ. You are empowered through the Holy Spirit to change the direction of your thinking.

{Here are a few practical tools that I have used over the years to speak out the truth about myself. I have looked at myself in the mirror and spoken God’s word over my life, or declared “I am beautiful,” “I am loved,” “I am valued.” I have thanked God for the body he has given me and the person he has created me to be. I have put alerts in my phone that go off throughout the day that remind me of the truths I have needed to hear.}

Below are some scriptures that have helped transform my thinking over the years:

I AM chosen….. John 15:16; Deuteronomy 7:6

I AM loved…..1 Peter 5:6-7; Romans 5:8; Romans 8:37- 39

I AM not alone…Isaiah 41:10

I AM worthy…. Psalm 139:13-15; Psalm 27:10
